Upcoming book walk in the old town on April 24

April 24WALK: Shanghai Old Town: Topography of a Phantom City with author Katya Kynazeva

Members: RMB 200/ Nonmembers: RMB 250

Back by popular demand! Old Town in the spring is beautiful …

This three-hour walk will take us deep into the labyrinth of the old town of Shanghai, the most historically rich, atmospheric, yet overlooked area of Shanghai.

The walk starts with a foray into the old river port neighborhood around Dongjiadu Rd, where we glimpse Shanghai’s oldest church and the ruins of the last merchant guildhall. Following winding streets filled with archaic workshops and stores, we’ll reimagine the centuries-old mercantile spirit of this area. Then we’ll enter the former walled city and follow the path of the ancient Qiaojia Creek, finding traces of fine residences, markets and temples. The tour concludes with a rare visit inside the astonishing private mansion of Shuyinlou, for a book signing.
