Shanghai Old Town walk and book talk with Katya Knyazeva

The old town is the most historically rich and atmospheric area of Shanghai, but it remains an unexplored territory for locals and visitors alike. At last, journalist and tour guide Katya Knyazeva has produced the first in-depth resource on the old Chinese City. “Shanghai Old Town. Vol. 1″ (2015) is a historic and photographic atlas that explores the ancient lanes and historic relics of Dongjiadu, the river port neighborhood outside the city wall. A three-hour walk guided by the author will take us deep into the labyrinth of the old city. We’ll start with a foray into the streets around Dongjiadu Lu. Following winding alleys lined with archaic workshops and stores, we will re-imagine the centuries-old mercantile spirit of this area. Then, we’ll enter the former walled city and follow the path of the ancient Qiaojia Creek, finding traces of fine residences, markets, and temples. The tour concludes with a visit to the astonishing private mansion Shuyinlou for a book signing. During registration please list preference of walk only or walk plus book.
