Berlin newspaper about Russians in Shanghai (1924)

"Disgraceful trade in Russian women is taking place in Shanghai. Afraid to lose the prestige of the white race, the European masters of Shanghai forbid the Russians from taking jobs at the port and at the factories, but turn the blind eye to their wives selling their bodies in port dens. One of the best Shanghai restaurants, Cortolne [perhaps, Carlton?], has replaced all male servers with Russian women. Women bartenders are forced to drink with the sailors. Is this the sacred mission of the Russians abroad?"

Nakanune ("Накануне", On The Eve) was a pro-Soviet Russian newspaper in Berlin.
