Tess turned ninety!

Here is a lovely tribute, by her long-time friends and colleagues at Historic Shanghai.

There are so many ways in which Tess's discoveries were instrumental in finding the right directions in my own research. As the first westerner (of our era) to start researching Shanghai's foreign past, she set a high standard for historic enquiry, which others still follow. If not for this benchmark, we'd be easily satisfied with shaky invented narratives and stolen identites of Shanghai buildings. One does not need to look far to find lots of examples of unscrupulous and plainly propagandistic history-making: the nationalistic legend of the Sihang Warehouse, the fake Cha House in the place of the original Qiu residence, "Southern Chinese arcaded buildings" on Jinling Road, and all that bunk...

In short – 老师万岁!
