Gated alleys of Shanghai

I don't know the exact location of this gated alley photographed in 1909 by Thomas C. Chamberlin, but carved ornaments in the corners under the lintels can still be spotted in the streets of Shanghai's old town 老城厢.

These ornaments have been ruined by vandals – all figurines are purposefully beheaded – and coated with multiple layers of paint:
