“...The saddest moment in all these evacuations comes when you have to decide which archives to bring. In Kiev, I had to burn most interesting things. I saved some of them and took with me – but what for? To drown in the Odessa waters what I failed to burn in Kiev. Of all the things that I wrote and recorded in my lifetime not a line has survived.”
