Shanghai Hong List (1939) is up

If anyone wants to consult the Hong List for the year 1939, there is the January edition (all of China, not just Shanghai) in open access at SOAS. And it is searchable!

The beauty of the 1939 edition is that it matches the map called 1939 Foreign Settlements Commercial Guide, on Virtual Shanghai, doubling the researcher's chance of getting somewhere useful.

Here is the north side of Avenue Joffre (Huaihai) near Route Cardinal Mercier (Maoming) just east of the Cathay Theatre:

To complete the picture, one can explore the historic visuals at PastVu – such as the image at the top, showing the numbers 850–864 Avenue Joffre, or the one below, showing L. Baranovsky's store at 850–852 Avenue Joffre:

My other posts about Hong Lists

I'm still going to upload Hong Lists 1932–1938 and 1940 to Archive.org, so stay tuned...
