"I thought Chinese would be easier to learn..." (1924)

A curious photo found on ebay, with a message in Russian on the back.

"This is me during my Chinese lesson in my office. My teacher, Mr. Ching, is happy with me so far, but I am very unsatisfied with my progress. I thought Chinese would be easier to learn. Every morning you can find us sitting like this, from 8:15 to 9:15 am, and sometimes even longer. Shanghai, June 1924."

What's the story? The Russian's tools of trade are an Oliver typewriter, a phone, magazines and books. If he is a journalist, however, he is not a Soviet journalist, because he uses pre-reform spelling in his letter.
