Jinjiafang drawings by Peter Fan

Here is a collection of excellent drawings of Jinjiafang and adjacent streets by Peter Fan, one of the most active members of the Drawing Shanghai group. The delicate tracing of the windows momentarily looks like lattices, but these are crude grey blocks used to seal off the openings of the homes after the people have been evicted. One wonders, naturally, why should such a cozy and central historic neighbohood go to waste – but then one remembers that land exploitation is Shanghai's number one source of revenue, and that quick profit is the top priority for the municipal government.
