Shanghai in 1980, as imagined in 1930

"Here we have an artist's conception of the modern city of Shanghai fifty years from today. Mighty buildings will reach towering heights above the city's traffic, which will follow the modern system of zoning. Special elevated roadways will be built for fast moving traffic, and the footpaths will be in the form of arcades. Heavy and slow moving traffic will be confined to the ground level. City residents will dwell many storeys above the ground to escape the dust and noise of traffic."

You can just see how the construction of the Sassoon House stirred the artist's imagination. What he did not anticipate is how depressing this "dwelling many storeys above the ground" will be.
