Genova impressions-7

"Contemporary Italians did have some sense of the direction from which the plague came from, though they did not blame the Genoese for it." (Epstein, 1996) It's the first Sunday of the quarantine. Two autotune parties spontaneously started in a local park; basketballs were heard bouncing. The police cars drive slowly through popular recreational spots and spook citizens off their benches. At the water's edge they accosted us: "Dove andiamo?" At 9 tonight the windows in our neighborhood in Genova started to flicker with cell phone lights; someone set off the fireworks on their roof terrace; someone played the national anthem from their window; and we all cheered, clapped, and shouted "Ciao!" to each other.
