The people of Berlin

The air of the city that is conjured here allots them only a brief, shadowy existence. They flit alongside walls like beggars and appear ghost-like in their windows only in order to disappear again, they sniff along thresholds like a genius loci, and even if they fill entire quarters of the city with their names, it is only in the way a dead man’s name fills the headstone on his grave.
