"Shanghai Journal: An Eyewitness Account of the Cultural Revolution" is a surprisingly stupid memoir. No wonder it's forgotten. No wonder Shanghai Library has it.

The only redeeming quality of it are a handful of interesting photos.

Soy Sauce Shop
This one is my favorite. The caption says "The shop front." In fact, it's a soy-sauce factory and shop 酱园, a traditional condiment business once ubiquitous in Shanghai. Following the example of a particularly successful "sauce king" all shops adopted the character 万(萬) in their names: Wanchun Jiangyuan, Wanyu Jiangyuan.
